Dent, a native Detroiter, is a professor at Middle Tenessee State University. He earned his bachelor's degree in vocal music education at U-M Ann Arbor, his master's degree in music theory / arranging at the University of Alabama, and his doctoral degree in music theory at the University of Maryland.

Dent is a baritone vocalist, arranger, producer and member of Take 6, the most Grammy nominated vocal group in history with 10 Grammy awards to their credit. In 1992, Dent received a Grammy award for several musical arrangements on the recording, "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration."
