The Detroit gospel music community is mourning the lost of one of its
finest. Jimmy Dowell, affectionately called JD, served has the Minster

with the late Rev. Charles Nicks, JD and the St. James Choir recorded

(the concert was a must attend event for gospel music lovers the Monday
night before Thanksgiving).
Born in Muskegon, MI, Jimmy Dowell's musical training began at age
4, and his formal education included training at Interlochen, Michigan
State Youth Music, and the University of Michigan.
JD wrote over 75 songs in his lifetime, 15 of which have been recorded.
Among his most popular compositions are "I Need Him," "I
Can Depend on God," and "God Has Done So Much for Me."
In 1975, he received the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s Song
of the Year Award for, "I REALLY LOVE THE LORD," which can
be found in the "African American Heritage Hymnal 2001."
Jimmy Dowell's passing was marked with a musical/family hour on Friday,
December 17, and funeral, Saturday December 18, 2004, at St. James Missionary
Baptist Church, 13600 Van Dyke St.
