The 20th Annual Stellar Awards show took place on Saturday, January 15, 2005, in Houston, TX and Detroit Gospel.com was on the scene. Three of our staff, Renee', Karen Hunt-Barker, and Brenda Underwood, left for Houston the morning of the 13th and their flight was just the beginning of a gospel star-studded weekend. Flying with them to Houston were none other than J. Moss and Paul D. Allen (of P.A.J.A.M.), Lowell Pye from Men of Standard, and Black Gospel Promo's Veda Brown.

Detroit was well represented on this year's Stellar Awards ballot and Detroit's own Deborah Smith Pollard (WJLB FM98 "Strong Inspirations" radio host) was named "Gospel Announcer of the Year." She received her award during the Thursday night "Kick-off Dinner." Other home grown nominees were celebrated during Friday night's "Nominee Dinner." These included Fred Hammond (with 6 nominations), Karen Clark-Sheard, God's Little Soldiers, Straight Gate Mass Choir, Deitrick Haddon, CeCe Winans, P.A.J.A.M., and Lowell Pye of Men of Standard.

Saturday night's Stellar Awards show was described as a "who's who" of gospel music's finest artists. Artists demonstrated an outpouring of love and support for each other across denominational, regional, and racial boundaries. Attendees commented that is was, "like family." The performances were described as phenomenal and the entire weekend was very exciting to be a part of.

Detroit winners this year included Fred Hammond for Producer of the Year, CeCe Winans for Female Vocalist AND Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year, and Deitrick Haddon and Voices of Unity for Contemporary Group/Duo of the Year. The versatile and talented Israel Houghton took home 2 Stellar Awards for "CD of The Year" and "Male Vocalist of the Year" (Pictured center with wife, Meleasa, on the left and co-producer, Aaron W. Lindsey, on the right)

Detroit Gospel.com thanks Renee', Brenda, and Karen for all of their hard work while at the Stellars. These dynamic ladies were blowin' up the name of "Detroit Gospel.com" in and around the Stellar Awards show. It was reported back by other media present that the ladies "took over" the photo room (all in love). They came home with 4 rolls of film, over 100 digital pictures, and taped interviews with some of gospel's finest, so look for more exclusive photos on the website coming soon.

"WE'VE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH"

Big Winner Tonex Sweeps Awards in all Six Nominated Categories Including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year

Houston, TX - The "20th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards" was a night to remember with special tributes, emotional performances and memorable moments that paid tribute to the gospel music industries' finest.  Gospel sensation Yolanda Adams, along with Donnie McClurkin and Tonex shared co-hosting duties and welcomed presenters including the legendary Roberta Flack, contemporary artist Lalah Hathaway, Mom & Pop Winans, Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary, T.D. Jakes, radio mogul Tom Joyner, Jonathan Slocumb and actors Kimberly Elise, Shemar Moore of CBS's "The Young and the Restless" and Dule Hill of NBC's "West Wing."

The evening sparkled with an arousing opening performance by Israel and New Breed.  The capacity audience also witnessed an once-in-a-lifetime performance by the legendary Hawkins Family, (Tramaine, Walter, Lynette and Edwin Hawkins) that paid tribute to gospel icon Richard Smallwood.  Smallwood received the James Cleveland Award for the major impact in the development and advancement of gospel music.

One of the most touching moments of the evening was Mary Mary presenting a teary eyed Donnie McClurkin with the Trailblazer Award which recognized his unique talent as a performer, writer and producer and role model for young people.  Another highlight of the evening was when Shirley Caesar, Inez Andrews, Dorothy Norwood and Albertina Walker formerly known as The Caravans, sang a few bars of one of their classic songs as part of the Male Vocalist of the Year award presentation.

Dr. Bobby Jones was presented with the Stellar Legends Award for his enormous contributions to the gospel music industry and dedication in bringing the gospel music community together.  The evening became praise party central with hand clapping, soul-stirring performances by "American Idol" Ruben Studdard, Tye Tribbett & GA, Fred Hammond, CeCe Winans & Marvin Sapp and Rickey Dillard & New G.

Tonex swept the awards by taking home six Stellar Awards.  Bishop Paul S. Morton and gospel veterans The Williams Brothers tied at three golden-flamed statues.  Cece Winans and Israel Houghton both received two awards and Martha Munizzi received New Artist of the Year honors.

This year's bronze anniversary celebration concluded with a high-energy, foot-stomping finale by Kirk Franklin and God's Property.  They were joined by the Texas Southern University "Ocean of Soul" Marching Band plus steppers and signers who performed a rousing medley of "Melodies from Heaven/Why I Sing/Lean On Me/Stomp."

The "20th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards" airs in national syndication over broadcast and cable television from January 22 to February 20, 2005.  Please check local listings for dates and times.
